This is a pair of discus that my friend Mike has at his store (discus.gr). Look how they will change the babies from one parent to the other with a dance! It's wonderful.
***Remember that even this 'special' discus food should not be the main food for discus fish. It is also important to feed your discus several times a day, best with different types of food. All the food I use for my discus fish, and for the other species as well, are frozen blister packages. Be sure to let them defrost before feeding them.
B. In addition:
Discus Bloodworms
Artemia
Beef heart
Daphnia,
occasionally white and black mosquito larvae.
C. Here's a food recipe from a discus hatchery
Discus Food Recipe
1. 350 pounds of turkey hearts 2. 150 pounds of turkey livers 3. 100 pounds of peeled shrimp 4. 50 pounds of fish fillets (non oily fish) 5. 32 pounds of green beans or peas (food for plecos) 6. 20 pounds of fish flake food (to help bind food) 7. 10 pounds of oatmeal
* Thaw all frozen ingredients to remove water and blood. * Cook the hearts, liver, fish and shrimp * Grind the hearts, liver, fish and shrimp * Mix all the ingredients together * Grind the final mixture and put into plastic bags. Flatten mixture in bags to remove air and then store in freezer. * Thaw before feeding to your discus.
Other Recommended Foods for your Discus
1. Frozen Hikari Blood Worms 2. Tetra Bits (soak in water for a few minutes before feeding) 3. Frozen or Live Adult Brine Shrimp 4. Mosquito Larvae 5. Daphnia (great for small fry) 6. White Worms 7. Mysis Shrimp 8. Chopped up Red Worms 9. Glass Worms
So beef and turkey heart - fish - shrimp mixture should be the main diet of your discus. Use other recommended foods as a supplement to vary your fishes diet. Try to avoid feeding freeze-dried foods or flake foods as their main diet if you really want your discus to grow.
